If you say “zed” in Italy, talking about Southafrica, your first thought is about Mr. President. But now italians are beginning to know other characters who remind to Zorro’s sign. Think about Zapiro, the Cape town satire cartoonist, whose story was recently explained by CNN, and by writer Nadine Gordimer during an interview with the italian paper Sole 24 Ore. “Since Zuma’s Hiv affaire, Zapiro started to draw him with a shower above his head, no matter what the topic of the cartoon was. Zuma denounced him, and for a while Zapiro stopped drawing in this way. But recently he restarted, still with a shower over President’s head, now alluding to corruption instead of sex”. That’s what Gordimer said, and moreover: “Zapiro hasn’t been stopped, SA press still publish him: that’s what I mean ‘free press’. And you should also know that in our country press can follow the law-court hearings, and Zuma doesn’t own television channels or newspapers”. A clear message to Italy.

E’ il caso di Zapiro, un vignettista di Città del Capo, la cui storia è stata recentemente raccontata dalla CNN nel programma African Voices, e per l’Italia dalla scrittrice Nadine Gordimer in una intervista al Sole 24 Ore.
